Turning rubber………………………………..

Tuesday, September 16th, 2008

So far I’ve turned stainless steel, mild steel, aluminum, delrin (a plastic), brass and today it was rubber. Rubber is interesting to turn. The main thing it requires is very sharp tooling. In this case I ground a cut off tool real narrow. I then ground and honed the top and front edges.

The tooling requires a certain amount of rigidity. For example and razor blade won’t work.  Because the rubber flexes a great deal, I’m using the live center to support the end of the piece.

What did I do without the Milling Machine?

Tuesday, September 16th, 2008

Now that I have the milling machine and lathe, I wonder what I’ve been doing without them for so long?

The Lathe is ALIVE……………………………………

Friday, August 22nd, 2008

This week I got the lathe and mill hooked up to power. What did I do without my own equipment for so long????

My first project was getting Mrs. Wonky’s parts done. Turning the stainless backrest top screw:

Tapping the bottom disc:

I needed a mandrel to turn some aluminum discs for another project. The discs have 3/4 inch holes in the center. I was planning to make the tool when I remembered that in my tool box was a mandrel that I had made as an apprentice twenty years before. Sure enough it was a 3/4 inch mandrel. It had never been used. Today I used it for the first time.

Mr. Wonky Stool comes of age……

Monday, July 7th, 2008

This morning I couldn’t take it any more. I had to do something in the studio. That something was finishing Mr. Wonky. Last time you saw him he’d thrown me to the floor and that’s where I’ve been ever since. Well today I kicked his butt and cut off his legs and rewelded them where they’re supposed to be. Anyway, Mr. Wonky doesn’t try to throw me when I sit on him any more.

Learned something new today, again……..

Sunday, July 6th, 2008

Today  Learned that what I build, a term that has eluded me till this morning, is “Studio Furniture.”

 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Studio_Furniture

Cool to know I now belong to the group known collectively as “Studio Furnishists.”

Just kidding. I made that  partup.

Hope all is well.

Sometimes you just need to build the thing. Most times it works. Sometimes…………… well………

Just a little note…………

Monday, March 24th, 2008

Been working on a big design project that has kept me away from adding to the site.

Went up to the Winter Park Art Festival. Winter Park is one pretty little town. The fest was situated right in the park downtown. The Amtrak tracks to the north and main street (Park Ave) to the south. Old live oaks shaded the venue and a crisp breeze made it almost too cool for me. I had the great pleasure of being able to enjoy the art without having to worry about taking pictures as my camera was locked neatly in the car………. Maybe next time I’ll remember to put the camera in my pocket. Weather was wonderful and the food and sites were the best. In Miami we have out share of those kinds of art shows, but I have to say, for atmosphere, the Winter Park Art Fest was the best.

Our favorite artists were the guys from Ignatius Hats. My wife went back before leaving and bought one of there handmade pieces.

If you get that way during the spring next year, I’d recommend stopping by and checking out this fest.

I’ve got a new wood article that’s just about ready. If I could remember how to write a complete sentence, I’d be doing better.

Cheers
